Overprotected may seem like a nice, cute and fluffy read at first. A lonely, overly-pampered society princess, a childhood friend and new body guard, and romance blossoming between them despite Daddy’s objections? Sounds simple enough! But simple as this book is, it actually manages to weave in some more serious issues like overly-controlling and obsessive parenting, attempted suicide, stalking, kidnapping and even a near-rape experience. I’m sorry if I just spoiled anything. Maybe it’s just me, but I felt that there was a darker undertone to the story (overprotective Daddy really creeped me out, his daddy love is so weird!) and some elements which may make you feel uncomfortable to see in such a sweetly-packaged book.
Being told from the view point of Ashlyn, the main character, Overprotected took on a slightly childish tone. This was kind of fitting, since Ashlyn is supposed to be an innocent young girl who has been shied from the horrors of life outside as she was growing up. However, Ashlyn’s frustration at always being under the thumb of her loving but domineering and overprotective father may come off as petulant to some readers. As a teenager myself, it’s easy to understand why she would feel this way, but Ashlyn’s constant rebelliousness and whining might get on some readers' nerves!
The love interest, Colin, wasn’t very appealing to me because I felt as if he was just this character made for Ashlyn. I know he’s supposedly mature and no longer a teen, but some of his words and actions seem too…unbelievable? Seriously, would a real life guy really refer to Queen Victoria in daily talk?! Moreover, Ashlyn’s initial “hatred” of Colin seemed like it had been thrown in just to add some tension to the romance…I found it a little immature and redundant. If I had a childhood friend who kept bullying me when we were kids, and the next time we met he had grown into a full-fledged hottie, would I care about what he did aeons ago? No. (LOL!)
I realise I may be overly harsh on this book and I apologise. I'm sure fans of romance will like the cute scenes from the imagination of Ashlyn, an avid romance reader herself. If you like a story where the strong, gentlemanly guy protects the sweet, innocent girl, you'll like Overprotected. On the whole, this is a nice summer read you can pick up and get through without getting bombarded with too many thoughts or emotions.

Sounds like a good, light beach read!
I think it can be really difficult to get relationships and couples right - some male characters are just too perfect for the heroine..and some heroines are just too perfect - i don't mind a bit of whining in a story...hell, i whine all the time!!
Can't wait to read your review of Divergent :)
